A look at teaching from the perspective of Laboqueria Arquitectura

La Salle Arquitectura

With the academic year drawing to a close, it is a fitting moment to highlight an aspect that has long been part of Laboqueria Arquitectura’s identity: teaching. Beyond the studio’s professional practice, our partners Ricard Grau and Alfons Tornero also teach at La Salle Arquitectura, sharing the experience they have gained—both on-site and through project development—with future architects.

Ricard Grau teaches the Construction I course, where first-year students begin to understand materials, construction systems, and their relationship with comfort, sustainability, and architecture. The course combines technical knowledge, experimentation, and critical analysis to understand construction through the lens of materials and their behavior.

Meanwhile, Alfons Tornero teaches Construction II, a second-year course focused on building structural and support systems. The curriculum delves into structural design, construction detailing, material selection, quality control, and life-cycle analysis, incorporating technical and environmental criteria at every stage of the project.

For Laboqueria Arquitectura, teaching is not an activity parallel to the profession, but rather a natural extension of our approach to architecture.
Constant interaction with students compels us to question, update, and deepen our knowledge, while creating a unique space for experimentation and reflection.

This link between academia and professional practice also fuels the studio’s research initiatives, particularly in areas such as circular construction, material lifecycles, sustainability, and construction process innovation. Research projects like REDÓ—focused on material recirculation based on “cradle-to-cradle” principles—exemplify how this continuous learning translates into knowledge applied to the projects we develop at the studio.

As we wrap up another academic year, we extend our gratitude to the students, faculty, and La Salle Arquitectura for making this shared learning environment possible. Convinced that teaching is also a form of learning, we remain committed to ensuring that teaching, research, and professional practice continue to enrich one another.
