Constant learning from the built work

Mediterranean architecture

Last week, the Laboqueria Arquitectura team visited the Mútua Metal·lúrgica de Seguros Inpatient Rehabilitation Center (1971–1980), located in Cabrils and designed by Antonio Bonet Castellana, currently known as Midat Mútua.

This visit allowed us to get a direct look at an architecture that can be considered a reference in the construction of a modernity rooted in the place. The project stands out for its sensitivity in the relationship between architecture, landscape and Mediterranean climate, articulated through intermediate spaces, routes and a materiality that dialogues with the environment.

Architecture and climate: a constructed relationship

In this building, it is evident how Bonet works with elements such as porches, terraces and patios to dilute the boundary between interior and exterior. These resources generate living spaces adapted to the Mediterranean climate and lifestyles, moving away from a hermetic architecture disconnected from the context.

At the same time, the honest use of materials such as ceramics, plasters or other traditional construction systems reinforces the integration of the building with the territory, consolidating an architecture that responds to both cultural and environmental criteria.

The built work as a learning tool

The visit is part of the studio’s ongoing training process. Direct contact with built works is considered a fundamental tool for deepening reflection on the relationship between architecture, landscape and constructive culture.

In this sense, the study of projects such as Cabrils’ allows us to review architectural strategies that, despite their simple appearance, incorporate great complexity in the way they respond to the site and climate.
