Transforming homes towards a sustainable future

Energy efficiency

Energy efficiency has become one of today’s greatest challenges. In a context of climate crisis and high energy costs, reducing consumption without sacrificing comfort is no longer just a technical issue—it is a social and environmental one.

At Laboqueria Arquitectura, we develop projects for sustainable buildings, energy-efficient homes, and energy rehabilitation initiatives. Our approach combines a comprehensive vision of sustainable architecture with solutions adapted to each urban or rural context.

Energy efficiency is about rethinking how we live, how we build, and how we share resources.

What do we mean by energy efficiency in architecture

Energy efficiency in architecture consists of designing and renovating spaces that make the most of the available energy, reducing consumption and emissions, all without compromising quality of life.

There are three factors in balance:

  • Passive and bioclimatic design, adapted to the natural environment (orientation, ventilation, thermal inertia, solar gain/protection, airtightness).
  • Healthy, locally sourced materials, improving comfort and reducing ecological footprint.
  • Responsible energy management, integrating renewable systems and fostering a culture of conscious use.

Energy efficiency is not just an addition to the project; it is an invisible framework that allows a building to function in harmony with its surroundings.

Energy rehabilitation

We are in a situation where more than 60 % of buildings in Catalunya were constructed before energy efficiency regulations existed. This means that most lose heat, consume more than necessary, and offer limited comfort.

Energy rehabilitation stands out as one of the most effective strategies to reduce emissions and improve habitability. The goal is not only to renovate façades or interiors but to transform the way buildings and homes consume and produce energy, ensuring that each rehabilitation contributes to a more resilient and healthy environment.

At Laboqueria Arquitectura, we work with a methodology that combines technical analysis, heritage respect, and a social perspective.

Sustainable buildings

When it comes to new construction, energy efficiency becomes the foundation of the design. Our projects for cooperative housing, public facilities, and rural spaces apply passive architecture strategies and healthy materials from the very beginning.

Our approach is guided by:

  • Orienting and compacting volumes to optimize solar gains and natural ventilation.
  • Integrating active roofs and façades, capable of generating energy or regulating temperature.
  • Reducing energy demand from the design stage, avoiding unnecessary technological dependencies.
  • Combining contemporary techniques with traditional knowledge, adapting solutions to the Mediterranean climate.

The result is sustainable buildings that not only consume less but also return value to the territory and wellbeing to their occupants.

Material recirculation

Another key axis of sustainability in construction is the recirculation and reuse of materials, an approach that promotes the cradle to cradle concept. Projects like Redó drive circular construction by recovering and revaluing materials from demolitions, renovations, or construction surpluses, returning them to the construction cycle and reducing waste generation. This strategy not only minimizes the environmental impact of construction processes but also creates employment, training, and new opportunities for the community, demonstrating that efficiency and circularity can go hand in hand with social and territorial development.

Energy efficiency and communities

In this energy transition, the involvement of people and communities plays a fundamental role. Projects such as collective self-consumption, cooperative rehabilitations, or local energy communities demonstrate that efficiency depends not only on technology but also on social organization.

Efficient architecture in Catalunya

Catalunya is at a pivotal moment to achieve a more efficient and sustainable housing stock. Through Next Generation funds, public rehabilitation policies, and a growing civic awareness, a future full of opportunities is opening up.

At Laboqueria Arquitectura, we work alongside public administrations and local entities to implement realistic, scalable, and healthy solutions that drive the energy transition from a local perspective.

Each project, whether urban, public, or private, is considered as another piece of the sustainable architectural ecosystem, where energy efficiency is the engine of social change.

Well-used energy, shared future

Energy efficiency is not just an economic saving. It is a way of living responsibly. We are aware that the future is built through collaboration, shared knowledge, and social action. Choosing efficient buildings, healthy materials, and active, conscious communities means choosing a fairer, more sustainable, and resilient way of life.
