House Plaça de la Palla

The renovation of this traditional stone house in the historic center transforms the existing structure to adapt it to new ways of living, improving its environmental performance without sacrificing its original character. The intervention reorganizes the interior spaces around the opening of a new south-facing patio, which becomes the heart of the house and a key element for natural light, cross-ventilation, and the connection between indoors and outdoors. The new layout places the staircase in a central position, facilitating smoother circulation and a continuous visual connection between the different rooms, while an upper gallery acts as an intermediate space capable of regulating the house’s climate throughout the year.

The project combines the restoration of existing building systems with contemporary solutions focused on energy efficiency and comfort. The original stone walls are preserved and enhanced through insulation strategies that improve their thermal performance, while the incorporation of passive systems, radiant floor heating and cooling, and attic buffer zones contribute to reducing the home’s energy demand. The intervention keeps the different structural layers of the house visible, integrating wood, stone, and ceramic into an architecture that engages with the history of the site. The result is a brighter, more efficient, and more flexible home, where traditional building methods and contemporary needs coexist in a balanced and natural way.
